Juma is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in San Francisco with a successful history of helping low-income youth gain work experience, business and financial literacy skills, and econonic self-sufficiency. Our highly effective program model empowers young people from distressed neighborhoods to transcend challenging circumstances, make successful transitions to adulthood, and fulfill their inherent potential. The mission of Juma Ventures is to break the cycle of poverty by ensuring that young people complete a four-year college education.
Founded in 1993 with a single Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream franchise in San Francisco that provided a handful of job opportunities to homeless youth, Juma has grown into a comprehensive workforce development program that is recognized as a national leader by others in the field. Today, the agency operates seven social enterprises in three cities (San Francisco, Oakland, and San Diego) and assists an average of 220 disadvantaged youth each year in making successful transitions to post-secondary education and adulthood, including juvenile offenders, marginally housed youth, foster youth and youth who are first in family to attend college. Since the agency's inception, Juma has employed over 2,500 youth who have earned more than $2.5M in wages. We have also opened more than 900 Individual Development Accounts with youth savings deposits totalling more than $783,000 and youth match earnings totalling over $1M. Our vision is to deliver a scalable, sustainable model that maximizes impact for youth and is "best in class" within the youth development and social enterprise fields. We have received numerous awards for our work including the National Youth Employment Coalition's PEPNet Award and a Community Achievement Award as the national organization of the year from Social Enterprise Alliance.
